2008 South Dakota State Fair a Success
September 23, 2008(Huron, SD)This year's 123rd South Dakota State Fair saw total gate attendance increase to 156,906, which is up 4 percent from 2007. Total gate revenue continues to rise, showing a 6 percent improvement over last year's figures.
"Many South Dakotans included the State Fair as part of their vacation plans this year and they were treated to a wonderful variety of entertainment, programs, and delicious food. Fairgoers truly enjoyed their Fair and confirmed that the South Dakota State Fair features the very best of what South Dakota has to offer," commented South Dakota State Fairgrounds Manager Jerome Hertel.
Leading the 2008 increases were grandstand ticket sales and revenue. The 2008 grandstand line-up included two nights of the Red Wilk Construction CBR Bull Bash, and concerts performed by George Jones, .38 Special, and Montgomery Gentry. VIP seating was sold out months before the first night of entertainment. Total grandstand ticket sales were up 32 percent and revenues were up 53 percent, compared to 2007.
Livestock and static exhibitors also saw a jump in participation. The number of livestock exhibitors on hand at the fair was up 23.4 percent. Entries in the livestock areas were up 14.1 percent. Static exhibitors were up by 5.3 percent; entries were up 9.5 percent. Entries by members of the FFA were up 14.2 percent this year.
The number of campers staying at the Fairgrounds during the annual exposition grew to 1,491 and revenue from camping increased 6 percent. Still weeks out from opening day, fair officials expanded the available space by opening up a campground across from the main south campground for reserved camping The fairgrounds is known as the largest campground in the state and literally transforms itself into a small city for a week.
For the third year in a row, Goldstar Amusements produced the largest carnival in the state at the South Dakota State Fair. Carnival sales were up 8.9 percent from 2007.
The number of commercial vendors and exhibitors renting lots on the fairgrounds was up 6 percent, with revenue increasing 11 percent.
"What an outstanding Fair! There was something for people of all ages. We were thrilled that thousands of people were able to enjoy all that was offered at the Fair for the five-day run. The South Dakota State Fair was definitely a big hit this year," commented Hertel on the overall success of the 2008 South Dakota State Fair.
Mark your calendars; the 124th annual South Dakota State Fair will take place Thursday, September 3 through Monday, September 7, 2009. Preview day will be held on Wednesday, September 2.
